Folks, I've been searching hi & lo for a DSL console reference on its commands. It is very similar to Cisco routers and switches, but was wondering if anyone had a simgular work that addressed a DSL modem's console commands (or, are they proprietary to the actual modem?). I own a D-Link DSL-300i, and plug into the console via serial port to configure the modem. It works fine, but was curious as to the other commands it contains. Any help will be most appreciated.

Regards,

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Broadband/DSL300/Manual/dsl300_manual.pdf

is the manual all d-link downloads for it are at

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Broadband/DSL300 I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Hi All,

Does anyone happen to know the console password Telus (Western Canada Telco) uses on the configuration of the DSL 300i modems?

Thanks!

Could you please pass along the console password to access the setup. Here is what I am doing...currently using Blackbox DSL Lan extenders 800 to send our own internet a couple of kms..Want to see if I can use DSL-300i to do same job as they are 1/10 the price.Thanks.

Yeah the console password for the dsl-300i provided by Telus would be useful. Also, using the dsl-300 utility, the program says it cant discover my modem.. anyone know why that would be ?

hi

i have a dlink dsl-300i modem and i wasn't told it's locked to telus, i bought a serial cable to enter the console of the modem and tried using the dsl-300 utility but it won't find a modem....help anyone, i need to change the VPI and VCI settings of this modem so it works with my provider.

to enter dlink 300i (from telus) config

get a serial cable (male female, extention type)
plug it in the back of your computer on the serial port
make a hyperterminal connection (direct to com)
make sure modem power is unpluged
open connection
plug the power on the modem
you will see on screen the modem boot up
then it asks for a password
anyone can help after this...

any help appreciated.

thanks

I too can confirm that the D-Link DSL-300i can be connected via the serial port. It requests a password. The default password "admin" (according to the PDF manual) does not work for the two TELUS-based modems I purchased. I too would be interested in hearing if anyone knows the default password for D-Link DSL-300i modems purchased for TELUS ADSL.

passwords are kept secret for customers protection. we wouldn't want you screwing up the config making us spend several hours on a service call. Try asking telus to put your own password on a dlink which we would then not support.

As far as I know, the modems that I purchased are my property. I do acknowledge that the fact that firmware is present muddies the water from an intellectual property perspective. However, that issue would be with DLink, not with Telus.

Telus has a policy for its telephone service, which I believe should apply to its other services too: if a problem is found to be caused by customer equipment, then the customer is charged for the repair and/or support service Telus provides.

I don't know about your modem model but for the DSL-300 you do it through the Configuration Utility (available on dlink's site or the modem's CD).
In the DSL-300 you can change VPI/VCI but the framing is greyed out (shows SSL/SNAP). New firmware and/or configuration utility should take care of that.

my modem is the one from telus, where you have to go thru the terminal to access it and use the password. if anyone has tried it and know how to change the settings let me know.

thanks

I tried that too on the DSL-300. Maybe yours works the same way.
1) Turn the modem's power off and connect it to a serial port.
2) Start up HyperTerminal (in Win2K, it's under Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications).
3) In Hyperterminal, define a new connection (just type any text and OK). OK the next popup too. On the next popup, set its parameters to the COM number where the modem is connected, speed at 9600, Flow Control Xon/Xoff. Keep Data bits=8, Parity=none, Stop bits=1. Click OK and you should get a blank window. Now Hyperterminal is waiting...
4) Turn the modem's power on.
5) The Hyperterminal window should display the modem's characteristics and stop at a line showing its IP number. That behaves like the DOS prompt. Enter HELP to see what's available. Some commands will take you down one level to their own menus. Type HELP again to see what these menus understand.
If you change something, use the SAVE command to save your changes (like the password maybe). EXIT takes you out (or shutting down Hyperterminal).
If you get garbage text on the Hyperterminal window, lower the serial port's speed to less than 9600.
Good luck.

Currently the vci settings are 33 (txvci and rxvci)
and they need to be changed to 35. The configuration
utility for the dsl-300 does not work with the
dsl-300i. The commands need to be entered via the
serial cable. Surely someone knows the commands to
changes the settings. I've downloaded several manuals
and none seem to cover the terminal interface in any
detail. I have a voicemail message into d-link to try
and sort this out, so I'll post here if I find out
before anyone replies.

I just came across some messages and still haven't tried the suggestions in them out. No idea if they'll work.
Presumably, for the DSL-300, once you get into its firmware with the Hyperterminal, there is a command that sets VPI/VCI. The command seems to be under the option r1483.
The relevant part from the notes I saw, looked like this:

>r1483 (<-- not sure if you need this)
>vpc 8/35 (<-- that's the VPI/VCI)
>home
>config
>save
>home
>restart

Another command in the same note that might be useful to some is the one that sets the IP of the modem.
It looked like so:

>ip device add bridge ether //bridge 192.168.0.1
>config
>save
>restart

That's all. I hope it helps.

Well, I figured it out even without tech support
from d-link... maybe they will return my call
next week.

Here's the solution to change the vpi and vci.

On the D-Link DSL-300i you must gain access to the
console using a terminal program through the serial
port. Once logged into the modem follow these commands:

ip

mpvc add 1 0 35 1 1

home

config save

restart

The mpvc command will change vpi=0 and vci=35
I believe you can also type "config save" from
within the "ip" menu. Thanks for the help... the
password messages were helpful since I have an
"orion99" model and the last post pointed me in
the right direction to fix the vpi/vci settings.

anybody know how to set those modems to work with bell

here are the settings i tried to play around but nothing, i still get a flashing second green light (status)

the step by step would be much appreciated and i am sure others can benefit from it

VPI: 0
VCI: 35
Framing: LLC
ADSL Mode: G.dmt

Hi,

Thanks for all the infor. I was trying to get into the same dsl modem and now I can. I was able to change the settings and get the dsl link status up and browse the net but the speed specified 160 up/160 down.
Then I went back into the config again cgange something now I can't get the dsl link status to connect.
If anybody finds any documentation on this it would be great instead of guessing.
Thnx
Bill
