I just got DSL from Verizon and it seemed all fine and dandy, everything loaded fast, etc etc. But then I noticed that every 5 minutes (while connected) it wouldnt load any webpages...it just kind of sat there with the loading image in the top-right spinning, then about 30 secs to a minute later, it comes back. It does this frequently and is very frustrating. Does anyone know why it does this and how I could solve it? I heard something about the DSL searching for IP's every so often, and that you could fix the IP, but I'm not sure if that would solve it...

nulshock,

DSL would not be searching for IP addresses. If you've got an unused network interface (NIC) in the machine, the DHCP client could be looking for a DHCP server to get an IP address for it. If so, you can either remove the NIC or assign it a bogus address like 10.1.1.1. Either way would eliminate the DHCP search.

If you do not have an unused NIC in the machine, we'll have to look further.

Hope that helps.

THANK YOU! This helps so much, wow, you guys are great! I wish I had half as much knowledge about such things! :)

nulshock,

Glad it worked out for you. Keep at it. Experience is the best teacher.

Good luck,

Don't forget that with verizon dsl you are also using tcp/ip protocol for your ethernet card, you will need to make sure that the NIC is set to Disable wins resolution (which will take any checks away from dhcp), and maybe try putting in dummy ips like 10.255.255.10 for the ip and 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask to trick your machine out of trying to make dhcp requests, since your dsl connection with verizon is using PPPOE.

Hope this helps
