Hi everyone,
First of all, let me give you my specs:
Linksys ethernet card (older one)
Linksys router (befsr41)
Fujitsu Speedport aDSL modem.
Windows XP Home
IP - Static
LAN - Static
i also have norton internet security 2002...

My problem: Everyone once in a while, seems to be twice daily, my DSL connection will drop but all my modem lights will remain on and constant. To be able to access the internet, what i have to do is unplug the CAT5 connection to my router (befsr41), unplug the CAT5 connection to my ADSL modem (fujitsu), wait a few seconds then reconnected the ADSL modem, then the Router. This is the ONLY way i can fix it as other quicker means will not help at all. I have switched IPs, no luck. I have been through 2 computers and it still is having the same problem it has always had ( has been going on for about a year now ). The only thing that remained constant is the old linksys ethernet card and the fujitsu modem. I just recently bought the linksys router, so it didnt hurt or help it. I am stuck here, i am thinking it is either the fujitsu ADSL modem or my old linksys card... other than that, im stumped. All help is much appreciated!!!

thanks,
jared

You shouldn't have to unplug both the CAT5 connection from router to PC and from modem to router. Only one of those should be your problem. It doesn't make sense that you would have to unplug both.

Honestly, it sounds like your router may be losing the connection from the modem. Have you tried going to 192.168.1.1 in your browser to access the router settings, forcing the router to disconnect/reconnect to the ISP? If that solves it every time it happens, then I would suspect a modem or line problem.

I've got that same router, so I doubt it's the router's fault. You never know...

cdogg,
thanks for the reply... im pretty sure it is not the router because i had the problem even before i bought a router, when the dsl modem went straight into my computer. I used to have alltel DSL, which uses DHCP, and i would literally have to go under command prompt and do a ipconfig /release, then an ipconfig /renew to get my connection back up and running. I figured it was alltel's problem with their DHCP servers, so i switched ISP's to get a static, but i am having the same problem...
when i get home from work, im going to bring my office computer to the house to see if it could just be my computer being weird or not, so i will get back to the boards tomorrow morning hopefully, or late tonight...

thanks again,
jared

I vote modem. For one thing your PC is isolated from all the plugging and unplugging with the router in place. As long as you do not unplug the power cord to the router, if forcing a renewal of the connection to the ISP by breaking the modem/WAN port connection fixes it, I vote modem.

I was going to vote for the possibility of someone else having your static IP until your last comment about your previous ISP provider.

bcastner,
thanks for the insight... i think im going to go borrow a like-modem from a friend that is not having this problem and see how it turns out. hopefully this will work because it is a pain to have to do this everytime i get disconnected from my "always-on" connection. And BTW... dont get ALLTEL DSL, their support is horrible. I called and told them my problem and they give me a ticket # to call back later on. After a solid year, my status was in progress, then all of a sudden i call back and it says my problem has been taken care of... hrmm... no! heh. thats another reason i switched ISPs...

but thanks again,
jared

Jared,
I wasn't implying that I ever thought the router was the problem. I did say that I think it's "losing" the connection from the modem, but I don't think it's the router's fault. Like I said, I have the same router and have used it with several ISP's and have never had a problem.

While you're waiting for a replacement, the next time it occurs, try going into the router settings to re-establish the connection through the modem. There is a "disconnect" option on the status screen. Once you disconnect, reconnect and see if the problem fixes itself temporarily. If so, then the problem is either the modem or distortion in the phone line.

Jared, as suggested earlier, check the configuration on the router.

Fujitsus are pretty notorious for this problem. They seem to be pretty sensitive to electromagnetic radiation. If it's near a monitor or other device that puts out EMI, move it.

rblue,

I did see one comment from a user of this modem that he had to put a 50' patch cable on the modem to move it away from his computer room to make it stable from EMI interference.

I would replace the modem before going that far.

LOL, that is a bit extreme, isn't it? Mine is about 15' away from my PC, but that is more an issue of how the phone jack is placed.

It actually worked out better since I was able to connect to both of my PC's with 25' patch cables.

My Fujitsu Speedport has been pretty stable. I only have intermittent issues with connectivity, and most of the time it's a problem on Verizon's side. My D-Link DI-704P has been flawless. Not bad for a router bought as an open box markdown (orig. $100, paid $50) at Best Buy.

Guys:
thanks for the help! i just got my new fujitsu in the mail (free of cost)... so im going to try that tonight and if no luck, im going to go ahead and try the extended patch panel idea also. I work for a computer backup firm, so i have a lot of resources, so i will try both out and let you know details. My fujitsu modem is right next to the befsr41 linksys router and my 5ghz phone... (could the phone be causing it??). other than that, im not sure of any EMI interferance near the unit, except for power cables running about a foot behind it. i will tweek and see.

thanks!!!

I have since replaced the DSL Modem and havent got kicked off in over 15 hours, which is a really good sign... im pretty much sitting here and waiting.

will let you know my success later on..

thanks again,
jared

the new modem seems to work! i have been up and running for about 40 hours now... theres no way i could have done that previously!

Hi jared5494

I have the same problem as you do with my router but I have a u-gate 3100 router and my modem is Nortel. I just wanted to know if the switch to a new modem helped you out so that I can pursue the same step.

Thanks
