I have DSL through Earthlink (SpeedStream 5667 modem) I am using a Linksys 4 port router with 4 Windows 2000 machines connected. My router settings are:
- Obtain an IP address automatically
- Login: PPPoE
- DHCP enabled
- The DHCP table shows the 4 computer's IP addresses as 192.168.1.100 through 192.168.1.103
Everything works fine. But my dsl connection drops sporadically. Sometimes daily. And I end up pulling the power cord on the router and/or the modem and fuss around with it and hem and haw and then the connection is re-established. Tonight I was getting a PPoE authentication error. But after the hemming and hawing and pulling plugs the connection was re-established. What is causing the connection to keep dropping and how do I stop it from dropping?

Also, why do I get a message box appearing from time to time on a few of the computers after re-establishing the connection that says "The system has detected an IP address conflict with another system on the network"?

Thanks for your help!

on the first problem i would have your telephone company check the line. it appears that there may be a loose connection in the line. The 2nd issue i would remove the dhcp and put in static ip's. heck there is only 4 pc's.

I was having the same problem with my speadstream router so I called my DSL service and this is what they had me do:

1) telnet into the router
2) type in rem list
3) look under the internet heading for utilization. This should be 50% or lower. The higher this is the greater your chance of being dropped is.

To Fix on my model this is what I had to do:
1) Type in rem setbwthres 50 internet
2) Type in rem del phone hsd 1 internet
3) Type in save
4) Type in reboot

I hope this works for you

Is that looking at the autenuation ( spelling) of the dsl.
Its true the higher the # the worse the service. However
if you lower your speeds say from 1.5 to 640 it will work better Jeter@LasVegas.com

I only have the 758 service and that seems to have taken care of the problem with lowering the speed.
