Has anyone ever created a tapecopy job using the
-dserialnum parameter and got it to work...

If you got it to work could you show me an example?

use the command ca_devmgr -adapterinfo to show you which devices are visible within ARCserve. For example a SCSI tape drive will show up with parameters for SCSI board, SCSI ID and LUN, the same counts for medium changers.
Run the command ca_devmgr -mediainfo 3 0 0 for a tape drive that is on board 3, SCSI ID 0 and LUN 0, this will show you the information regarding name, random ID, Sequence number AND serialnum of the cartridge in the tape drive if available. If this command shows you a serialnumber (which mostly is the case for barcoded tape libraries but NOT on standalone tape drives) you can use this for the tapecopy command.
In general: as ARCserve's tapecopy command is the easiest to use with <blank media> (ie. new or erased tape cartridges) I advise you to use them likewise. This way you do not need to provide parameters like dserialnum.
A complete explanation of the command line utilities can be found in the ARCserve Administrator Guide.
