Hey Everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster, etc, etc.

I have an IP500 V2 connected to 6 DS30 Expansion modules. I have replaced 4 DS30's over the last month and this particular IP500 seems to just burn out each new one I put in. They all run off the same ground and same surge/battery backup. I thought maybe the expansion port was causing the issue (port 5) so I moved it to port 7, which seemed to hold for about a month, and my boss just called and informed me that that module just blew as well. Anyone ran into this before and have a root cause? They are running 9.1.11.0 and it seems only the DS30 we replace is the one to go bad, no matter the port.

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Just got off the phone with our vendor support. Apparently the version of our DS30 needs 9.1.12 to run right. Trying it out, will post results.

Edit: Blowing up may be a bad choice of words. They give a red light, blink back to green about 30 seconds, then blink amber to red, then back to green again. Just to clarify.

You are powering up the ds30's 1st then the ip 500 right?

I have the same issue at a customers site.

Running release 9.1.8. Replace 5 DS30's by now.

Yes we are. Just running the upgrade to 9.1.12 on my own test box now to see if it works.

I will let you know what I find out on my test box.

Try to connect a serial cable to the faulty DS30 to see what is happening.

If this upgrade test doess't work, that is my next step. Upgrading a box from 9.1.8 to 9.1.12, hope this does the trick.

How to upgrade a faulty box to 9.1.12?

First, see the log via the serial cable.

I'm afraid it will timeout after the DTMF (something....)

Our vendor support suggested upgrading the IPO it connects to from 9.1.11 (9.1.8 in the case of my test box) to 9.1.12 to see if it resolved the issue.

Fix suggested above did not work. Tracking down a serial cable now...it may have to wait till tomorrow as I will have to grab mine from home as I doubt there is one laying around our office.

Anything you can suggest to do once I connect via the serial cable? I found this: if that seems about right.

That is a classic sign that there is a PC plugged in. Do you have all stations unplugged when you fire it up?

Dermis and feline can be divorced by manifold methods.*

how are you connecting the DS30 to the IPO
we recently had a cust try to move one to another floor, this blew the port on the IPO & the expansion module.budbyrd s

also as budbyrd says connecting a network adapter to a DS port cuses all sorts of problems (usually just a reboot cycle on the Ds but eventually this leads to failure)

Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

Yes, I agree with Budbyrd, I have seen maintenance people mistakenly plug a PC into a phone jack connected to an Expansion Module and lock the entire module up.

If you unplug all the stations from that DS30 mod, reboot it, then reboot the processor, does the module come back to life?

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I spent all day tracing cables on a completely unlabeled patch panel, with no rhyme or reason as to what went where, in an 80 degree room. Finally got OUR stuff separated and labeled. Had an old IP400 DS30 and plugged that in, plugged everything back in, and 4 extensions were not showing up. Went to each location, and on the last one (of course) I found a smart TV plugged into the phone port. I unplugged that particular patch cable from our system in the event that the customer plugs it back in after getting everything on a working DS30 and taking the old one back to work on. Would a smart TV be enough to cause this issue?

This is what I was dealing with. I offered to quote a cleanup of that rack for the customer, they said "No, it's not causing any issues"

I'm guessing a smart tv would have the same effect as a computer and a computer would definitely do that.
