Drop Shadow effect not working. ?????

I've got some images from a dig. camera (jpegs) that I have placed on my artboard in AI. I'm trying to apply drop-shadows to them - but they never show up. Anyone have any clues why this is? The images are in RGB. The Filter>Stylize Drop Shadows is always greyed out. SO i use the EFfects>Stylize Drop shadow command. I can create a drawing in AI, like a circle or something simple, and apply the drop shadow no problem..... But any images i'm placing just wont accept the shadow.
Any ideas??

I believe that drop shadow in AI is for AI artwork and not for images. The only way I could think around this is, if you would create an object the same size as your picture and then put it in the back and then get the kind of drop shadow your looking for. OR, use photoshop.
