after doing some updating, both my ROM AND r/W drives are missing, according to My Computer I only have "C" and "A" drives, they aren't listed in the bios either. any help please.

most likely you just did somthing with some sort or cd writing software.

assuming this is the issue you should follow the steps on this site (hp/compaq support) pay no attention to the fact it says "Compaq Presario PCs" it dosnt matter... i have done this on my sony laptop and my homegrown desktop.

To save time skip to STEP 4 but please before you go editing the registry, make a backup. :)

Sometimes the drives do not appear in windows but they show up in the Control panel if you had previously had them installed with a yellow exclamation mark. Sometimes you can access the errror information or code which can be looked up in the Windows Knowledge Base.

Often you just have the jumpers not set right and if you change the jumpers you can fix the problem that way.

I would check these first before I started messing with the registry. The Roxio Easy CD Writer software sometimes causes problems in XP, and there is a Registry Edit that can get them working again.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

that is true but more often than not if the drives were previously working and then suddenly "dissapear" then there is an entry that needs to be removed from the registry and that fixes it.. or at least it has the last 4 or 5 times i did it.

Code:
Click the small plus sign (+) next to each of the following folders, in order:

HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE, SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Right-click LowerFilters from the right side of the window and click Delete (see Figure 1).

Right-click UpperFilters from the right side of the window and click Delete.

Les, I updated Windows Media Player 9.

Ceh, As far as I remember, my drives never showed up yellow marked, they were working fine when suddenly went away.

Umm,and Z I just followed the steps at the Updating site, and this darn thing still it's not working. And about messing with the registry, he, he, when I chose Ignorant as my screen name, I mean it. I would love to wait and try something else. Come on, keep the good ideas coming, I really need 'em! ;(

This might sound stupid but hav eyou checked the drives powercables and ide cables to ensure that they are plugged in? If you can't see the drives in the bios or in the bootup text, then it suggests that they ar enot hooked up.
