I have a Canon DR-5020 high speed scanner installed on a Win2K box with most/all the latest updates and drivers.

First, I get prompted by the New Hardware Wizard every time I reboot, asking me to install the drivers.

Then, when we run Canon's scanning utility...Captureperfect (most recent version available from Canon)...I get an SUTWAIN.EXE has generated errors message when I hit the "save" button at the "save as" menu.

the Dr. Watson log file said it was an access error, so I called Canon and they said I should check the permissions on the location I'm scanning to. The permissions have been set up for the user, everybody, system, administrator...everything that could hold me back. He also said that they see that error a lot when scanning to a network location, but I'm scanning to the C: drive.

Anybody have any ideas?

Has it ever worked properly? Is the scanner listed in Device Manager? Are you the administrator on the computer?

yes, it has worked properly.

the scanner is listed in "other devides" in the device manager.

the account I was using does have administrative privelages, but I also tried to use the administrator account itself with no luck.

Go into Device Manager, right click the scanner and select Update Driver. Select Install from a list or specific lcation (Advanced). Select Include this location in the search and browse to the driver location. Keep clicking next until you're finished. Then see if that helps.

I have the drivers, in a way. they're in a self installing .exe file.

I don't know which files are the actual drivers because they're not "installed" in the device manager. I've had this scanner on another win2k machine and the drivers were never installed...a few bugs but we could get the job done like that. it actually worked that way.

but still, I'm not sure what files are the drivers. I've gotten the most recent version from canon's web site, but they don't want to work either.

is there any way I can find out what the driver files are if it's not installed in the Device Manager?

Outher is not a good location for any divice to be installed in. If it is installed in outher that means windows dont know what it is.
You sometimes can put the downloaded driver in a folder and right click and upzip to the folder, I us winrar.
I would right click My computer, click manage, double click divice manager, rgtht click on the divice in outher and uninstall it.
Then go to the top of the device manager tree and right click the computer image and select rescan for hardware changes.
If you was able to upzip the drivers to a folder you can point the discovery of new hardware to that folder.
good luck.

I've tried uninstalling it from the device manager many times. The thing that worked best, listed in another post, was disconnecting the scanner and reinstalling everything before plugging it back in.

It's still not technically "installed", but it'll let us scan for now.

I'd like to find a solution, but is this is the best I've got then I'll gladly live with it for now.

Is the scanner listed in the Scanners and Cameras applet in Control Panel?

not yet, it's still under "other devices" because the drivers haven't been installed yet. It's go tthe name and model of the scanner correctly...so it's not called "scsi device" or something like that.

It's a Canon DR-5020.
