I downloaded and installed service pack 3 for Win2k and it wiped out my cd-rom. I downloaded new drivers for it and now Win2k won't load them and gives me error message device isn't working properly windows is unable load drivers for this device error code 31 how can I fix this?

Tried removing it from Device Mgr. altogether and rebooting to let the machine rediscover/reinstall it?

Thanks, but I already tried removing, uninstalling and reinstalling, rebooting, etc. No luck with any of the above.

How about completely unplugging the cable & power from the CD-ROM unit after removing it & all references to any drivers for it from your device man./PC?

Then reboot.

Put it in another machine that sees it working correctly and flash the firmware.

Well, the news is not good. I hope that the previous post works for you.

From what I've been reading (search Error 31) reinstall of Windows seems to be the reoccuring theme (yikes!)

Hate when I see that because it's the pat answer from every ISP that can't help you with your internet connection. :p

Another post spoke of removing all references to the CD-ROM drive from your registry - not sure what to do after that one- seems excessive, too.

Does it ever give you the opportunity to type the exact path to the driver you want? I just can't quite figure out why this is so hard- I've hooked up many USB & they always go flawlessly (knock-on-wood!).

If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll continue the search for you. Have to go out of town most of the day, though.

Good luck!

get hold of a win98 boot floppy disk and confirm that you have a workable CD-ROM, recognised properly by the bios and OS. Check that the bios is configured correctly. Is it cabled in properly?

In my experience it is possible to boot from a CD-ROM, setup an operating system, and then find that the OS cannot see the ATAPI device to load drivers for it.

CD-ROM drives are generally less robust than hard drives or floppy drives, and fail more often. Fortunately, they are not too expensive or difficult to replace.

some questions
how many cd type drives are on the system?
can you see any cd drives when you run "diskmgmt.msc"?
are you running any Adaptec or Roxio software for a burner?
if you are and the file "CDRALW2K.SYS" is missing there will be no cd type drives.
here is a MIcrosoft link."Cannot Access CD-ROM and "Code 31" Error Message in Device Manager After You Remove Adaptec Easy CD Creator from Your Computer"
