Does anyone have a notification method for when drives go offline in TSM?

I've been looking for a way to be notified immediately via email as soon as a drive goes from an online to offline status.

I've tried using MIS Helpers Alchemy network monitor (to scan for the event log entries), but it doesn't work. We have TSM operational reporting, but it only runs once a day and I'm looking for something more simple.

Any ideas / help is much appreciated. Thanks! -JG

Not sure how much this will help you, but you can monitor the system through a command window

dsmadmc -id=id -pass=pass -mountmode

This will show all the tape mounts, request, and if any drives go offline. It will not produce an alarm, but you can glance at it every so often.

With the TSM Operational Reporting, you should setup an Operational Monitor that runs more often. This can be found under "Tivoli Storage Manager > TSM Server # > Reports > Operational Monitors" in the Operational Reporting console.

When you create a report, the default will be to check the TSM server every 30 minutes and cover a 1-hour period. You could change that to check once every 10 minutes if you want more immediate notification.

When you create a report, you will find the "Custom Summary" report in the list. By default, it should contain an item for "Number of offline drives" that alarms when one or more drives are offline. You can find these settings by clicking on the "Custom Summary" report and then clicking the "Settings" button. This report will also alarm on high DB, LOG, and diskpool utilization, etc. You can add just about anything you wish.

For immediate notification, have this report email your cell phone or pager. Most cell phones are an email destination if you have text paging.

Thanks, guys.

From what I understand, the operational reports are NOT conditional. Meaning I'll get an email every 30 minutes regardless if a drive is offline or not. In that case, I don't need the extra spam in my inbox.

We've also had a problem with our reporting to where once we have so many reports on it, it just quits working. Maybe once we fully upgrade to 5.3, these issues will go away. -JG
