Drive Mapping

We are unable to map a network drive on a Win2k Pro SP4 box. The box is trying to map to a share on our terminal server (Win2k SP4 member server). I am able to map the drive on multiple other machines (2k and 98SE) without a problem. We tried to map the drive from a DOS prompt and got a System Error 53 message. Upon checking MS kb 242001 we discovered that this may occur when connecting to a DFS share. However, DFS is not installed at either end.

Any thoughts?

I suggest first finding out if there is a connectivity problem. Try pinging both the host name and ip address. If they pass then check authentication and permissions to the share. Also make sure the share is available.

Howdy.

There is no connectivity problem. The user can ping it. Also, there are multiple users going into the same share, so perms are not an issue.

We are using whichever drive letter is available...no specific one.

can you access the share through explorer?

try that first, it may give you an error that would explain more.

also, try making another share on the box and mapping to it

Howdy again.

Well, we are unable to ping the server by name from the workstation in question. We also tried the FQDN without success.

We are, however, able to ping by name all of our other servers. As stated previously, the workstation has multiple drives mapped to other servers.

Something to note: The workstation has a dual-boot set up using V-Com System Commander. One side is 98, the other is Win2k Pro SP4. The 98 side has NO problem mapping the drive.

Perhaps a reinstall of TCP/IP?
