I have recently set up a business and am about to start developing my website as a hobby and want to know whether I should go the whole hog and try to get to grips with Dreamweaver as I want it to look professional or am I being too ambitious and should I start off with Publisher...any advice would be much appreciated....pros and cons etc....

turn your pencil arround and erase the "vs. publisher" part of the post and you got your answer ;-)

Cheers lebisol....that bad is it ;-)....I take it DW is fairly straightforward to figure out i.e. point and click not command line driven?

most of the work can be done in "point and click" approach.
However, dreamweaver will allow you to work in code view and in design view so u can click and watch the code being generated.
MS Publisher is joke.....supposted to put in "I can design mode" while u miss out on basics.....
think of DW as "convertible HUMMER" and M$ Publisher as "fixed up YUGO"...which one will u take if ur up for some "bad weather"
...all this IMHO
:)
All the best!

"Hobby" then do all the tutorials that are on board and then search the net for some more. best way to learn if you have the time.

Ugh! I had someone in one of my classes want to edit a web site she had done in Publisher. What a nightmare!

Please Please Please use software for what it is designed for!!! Publisher is for the printed page, NOT web pages. It does a decent job of publishing, even though Quark and PageMaker are so much better of course.

Thank you (and takes a bow)

...hehehe what did I say about Publisher... I found DW at version 2....never took my statements back; MM crowd makes great products....it is just the matter of personal style/work flow....some still like BB edit :-| .....

I found DW at version 3 and didn't like it. I preferred NotePad back then. Anyway, I wound up teaching FrontPage because that is what my customers wanted. No comment on that (as you can imagine). I had to teach 97 and 2000 and now we have no more call for it! No one is using it. I got most of them switched over to DW! I am so bad!!! I also used to used Hot Dog for years and HTML Editor v2 and 3.

Thanks guys....I'm trying to get a copy of dreamweaver so I can get started.....thanks for all your comments...

If you can purchase an educational version, you can find it for $79 - $99. I just Studio MX 2004 with Flash Professional for $280 (educational pricing). Yes, it's the full version....

I would assume the educational version does everything the non-ed version does?

Yes it does. They leave nothing out. BTW, I am in error. The pricing for MX 2004 with Flash Professional was $241 vs. $999 retail.

but does this mean that only schools can purchase this version to teach or can anyone buy this version and produce websites?

Here's from the Macromedia store:

Education end users are full-time students, faculty, staff and employees of government-certified educational institutions, consisting of Elementary, Middle, Junior High and High Schools, and Accredited public or private universities, colleges, and community colleges that grant degrees requiring at least two years of full-time matriculation.

Education versions of Macromedia products are intended for instructional and administrative purposes only and may not be used for any commercial purpose. Macromedia will conduct periodic security audits to be certain of your education qualification.

It's up to you to figure out if you qualify or not. :)
