I'm using CorelDraw 9 OEM with Win2000 Pro. It was working fine until today.

But now i get "failed to create a new file" when i try to create one, and when i try to open an existing one. Preview works fine.

During the approximately 16 hours between my last successful run and the discovery of this problem, i fooled around with security (i'm trying to eliminate it) and installed 2 video heavy games, which required me to also instal DirectX 8.

This affects Photopaint too, but not Capture. Office 200, Netscape 7, and Outlook Express 6 are also uneffected.

Any thoughts?

As odd as it sounds, make sure that your default printer is powered on and available to your computer. From v9 forward, Draw and Photopaint want to be able to communicate with a print device. A workaround is to make something like Acrobat Distiller or a PostScript Print-To-File driver your default printer. Let us know if this helps.

The default printer was on another computer, which i only turn on when needed. I changed it to the fax program, and suddenly it works. What a dumb way for a program to work.

Oops, saved too soon. I've looked over other msgs here and elsewhere on the net and there are suggestions to uninstall, change the time zone to Pacific, change the year to 1999, and reinstall. I'll try that wehn i have more time, but for now i've got a solution i can live with. Thanks for the tip.

Well, no, it's not really dumb - the application has certain options that will or won't be enabled depending upon the type of printer going to be used (i.e., postscript or not postscript). So in order to determine this, the app needs to talk to a print device to determine what's up. No print device, it won't start because it can't determine what options to display. It's like having both a T1 and a TT font with the same name installed at the same time. If you open up a doc with that font installed, nothing will display because there are two fonts with the same name and it won't know which one to use.

the "time zone" issue is only if you're trying to install SP1 and SP2 on a W2K or WXP system. MS changed the way date/timestamps are interpreted by the OS with W2K. Since v9 was released long before W2K came out there was no way to forsee such a thing occurring. In cases like this, set the timezone to +8GMT (Perth) do the installs, change the timezone back after both SPs are installed and the sytem rebooted.

First - I thank those of you that posted this problem - your info helped me and I have solved my problem with "failure to create". I encountered a mysterious version of this... when I was working at my office with my lap top - Corel Draw 9 worked wonderfully... at home it refused to let me open anything or create a new document. The PROBLEM was that my printer chosen at the office as DEFAULT was on our LAN connection - the common printer. By chosing a different - NON LAN connection - I solved my Corel 9 Problem. The posting to date helped me figure it out THANK YOU. PML
