DPT/IGAR with Intervening Regions?

Can anyone let me know if you can use IGAR/DPT only with a direct region connection or can you use it via an intervening region?
All the documentation I have seen only uses direct ip-network-region connections.

No trees were harmed in the sending of this message; however, a significant number of electrons were slightly inconvenienced.
