Hi All:
We work in a network and share Internet. We are unable to use OE to get our messages with the following error messages:

The host 'smtp.wdgco.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'Work', Server: 'smtp.wdgco.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Have already read MS help files to no avail.
Do we have to install EXCHANGE or some programs as such on our server?this is the only thing I can thin of.
Cheers

Hello,

The chances are quite likely that the network runs a private IP addressing scheme and as such, the internal network doesn't know about external servers such as your POP3 and SMTP hosts.
The POP3 and SMTP protocols don't support operation through a proxy server, so what you have to do is as follows:

On the proxy server setup, set up port forwarding of port 25 through to port 25 on the SMTP server, and the same with POP3 which uses port 110.
Next, on your workstations, tell it that the SMTP server - and POP3 one is the IP or name of the internal server.
Then, when your PC connects, your server acts as a virtual email server and forwards requests to the external host and responses back. Voila.

If you don't run any proxy server software, MS Exchange is not necessary, there are many lightweight applications that are far easier to administer. Wingate, NetProxy and WinProxy all spring to mind. Microsoft ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) is another option, but is not as flexible to configure.
