Hello -

I have an application that requires Windows 2000 Server SP3. I just purchased a new server and Windows 2000 Server installation media. The installation media installs SP4 with no option to removed SP4.

How can I downgrade to SP3 as SP3 will not install over SP4.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Well if your app requires sp3 u can use sp4 .. sp 4 includes the fixes from sp3 and should be even better .. it should work. give it a try.

if not.. your in trouble. normally u have the option to, when installing a SP, you can use the archive option to rollback.

hope this helps

Look for Win2k server setup CD with no service pack and reinstall win2k server to the existing win2k sp4 server. Sp4 will be gone then install SP3.

Usually when an application that states "Requires Service Pack 3" is actually saying it requires a minimum of Service Pack 3. I haven't seen an major applications not work with SP4 (that worked with SP3).

Hello all -

Thanks for the reponses so far. Some additional information based on the responses:

- I agree most major apps will run on the latest SP, but this a specialized app. We are contacting the vendor to see if this truly an issue. This post is attempt to 'be ahead of the game' should the SP requirement be strict.

- We don't have another Win2K Server installtion CD with an earlier release. Having such a CD would solve my problem. How could I get one? Would Microsoft have it available?

Thanks again.

- John Mercure

About the CD you can request/borrow from your vendor, stating your problem. I guess they can help you better (most vendor have a good after sale support). As far as I'm concern there's no licensing issue because you have a right to use win2k server SP4 already.

Hi J.C. Mercure,

I had this very same problem with SP4 and made the mistake of thinking I could roll them all back. Not possible in my case. I had to re-install 5 servers using this specialised production supervision application.

Same advice as previously stated. Install SP3!

Good luck
