Hi Guy's,

I hope you can help. We currently have an x64 server and we have been shipped x64 server 2008 R2 OS.

We have a problem where the application we are installing on this server does not support x64 OS. We have been told that we can downgrade to server 2008 standard.

I understand that I will need to contact Microsoft, but can anybody help with what the process would be to achieve this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You can downgrade license wise, but you cannot actualy downgrade the OS, you will need to backup your data, rebuild in 32 bit 2008 then restore your data.

Will I still be able to use my x64 license?

AFAIK, Windows Server 2008 R2 only comes in the x64 flavor, not in the x86. The only downgrade possible is to revert to Windows Server 2008 (without the R2 stuffed on).

Microsoft O/S licensing allows you to downgrade to any previous version. Sometimes thou getting a key can be painful if you don't have a MAK key.

I don't believe a R2 license key will work on 2008, but I am not positive.

If you are using KMS activation then there should not be any issue in activation. If you are using a MAK key then you need to check what MAK key you are using. You may have to get in touch with the activation team on this (that should not be a problem). Let me know if you have any questions on activation or downgrading.

Hi Guy's

Just to give you an update. The license key I had was a retail one and therefore I had to order a downgrade media kit which cost me £15.00 for MS to send me a new disk along with a product key.

The existing x64 license did not work on the x86 OS, so this was the only way to get it to work.

However, if I have a volume license they could of done it over the phone there and then.
