I have quite the stairstepping dilemma on my hands. I have adsl running through a home portal router (provided by my isp) which runs our internet through our phone lines, now i am trying to hook up TWO internet connections in my room, one for my computer and one for my PS2 for online gaming.

I bought a linksys adsl router and everything worked fine, the internet on my computer and the online gaming gave me no problems. HOWEVER, i cannot log into my hotmail accounts, cannot download updates from windows update, or bid on ebay...regular browsing is fine, and some password restricted websites work without any glitches (online banking, university email, etc..)

when i revert to the old setup, running the hookup directly to the computer i have no problems...any suggestions???

Lets start with checking how you double routed things. DHCP disabled, the connection to the second (linksys) through regular LAN ports and not the WAN ports. Time/date set on the router and all clients appropriately, including Time Zone.

Secured site issues (such as yours) can be tricky. Once your are sure that the routers and clients have the correct time/date set, look to MTU issues.

As you did not specify your Broadband connection details, the best way to remove MTU issues is to test them. The BroadbandReports site has a wonderful Tweak Test, and a great freeware tool in DrTCP to adjust your clients. Run the Tweak test, use the tool to modify client RWIN and MTU values based on the test:
The last step is to enter the setup page for both routers and set a MTU value that matches your clients.

Reboot the routers, the modems, and last the PCs after making these changes.

ok, still having to physically disconnect the second router and plug in connection directly from first router. i'm fuzzy on the directions on how to configure my routers simply because there is no place/driver/interface for these routers as they seem to "just work"...i realize this sounds ambiguous, but the only place i can tweak anything to do with the network is in the internet options and "my network places"

when i last unplugged the second router i realized that the light on the lan connection was orange. once i plugged it in directly from the first router it turned green. does this imply anything???

It implies it shifted from a 100mbs connection to a 10mbs connection.

and to shift it back i need to...???

It is not the issue, but the ligts on the connection are (not always) green if it identifies 10 mbs, orange if it identifies 100 mbs. The connection is best left to its default to Auto negotiate the speed and duplex.

Have you thought about purchasing a phonenet to ethernet bridge device? This would make your connection I think a lot easier to do.

hi..can you try and open the port 443 on the set up page on the router?..thanks

"imagination is more important than knowledge."

i would, but i have no setup pages for the routers at all...

Connect directly to the linksys router.
Start Internet Explorer.
In the address bar type:
The password is admin, and the user name field is left empty.

Note: for this to work you need to give yourself a static IP:

In TCP/IP Properties, uncheck "Obtain an IP address automaticly". Type in as your IP address 192.168.1.2, Subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.1.1

Then start IE as mentioned above.

bcastner,

the threads you are giving are of immaculate help. the problem is resolved, i had to change the option to accept mhcp to 1492...thanks a bunch

correction, that was mtu setting to 1492...my fault, just a little excited
