I have been trying to implement inter-VLAN routing on a Cisco 1720 router. I have an IP Plus image for IOS 12.2(10). It's image C1700-K8SY-M. According to Cisco, it should include support for dot1q encapsulation. But whenever I set-up a sub-interface and try to set encapsulation with: encapsulation dot1q 104, I get an "invalid input" error marked at the beginning of dot1q. All attempts to modify the encapsulation keyword is met with the same error. Using the "encapsulation ?" command results in a unrecognized command error. But entering "encapsulation" by itself gives me an "incomplete command" error. What gives? I've been to Cisco TAC and nothing stands out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From my experience with Cisco's TAC on this issue, it is not supported on the 1700 series routers..

I remember reading when the 1700s came out that even thought they had a fastethernet port, they would not trunk due to a different chipset. I hoped they would correct that somehow but I have not kept up with it. This was in the included docs with the router. I dont remember what IOS load it was..

What I did find is *only* the 1721 supports vlan trunking based on 802.1q
