When I try to do a run command (ie; ipconfig /all) the dos windows flies by so fast I never get to read it. I can bring up a dos window on my own, and it'll stay. Any ideas on why the dos windows doesn't give me a chance to read it, and how do make it stay, till I want to exit?

Go to your start button and click on run. Enter "COMMAND". This will open a DOS window.

Thanks guys. Knew about the "command" command, didn't know about the Wntipcfg prog. I was thinking (wrongly no-doubt) that their might be a setting somewhere to get the dos window to stay up when I run a command in XP.

"command" is the 16-bit command interpreter.

It might be better to:

Start, Run, CMD

This will open the modern command processor in a window.

You can also Start, All Programs, Accessories, MS-DOS prompt to open a CMD box.

And you can right-click an empty area of your desktop, create a new shortcut, and start the shortcut wizard. Point to c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe and the command to run. No when you click your shortcut a nice DOS box opens to type command into and execute.

Also the Command Prompt in XP is equipped with a scroll bar. This scroll bar feature lets you see the top of your long file lists ("dir" for example) and also lets you scroll back to look at previous commands you’ve entered. The Command Prompt also uses the up and down arrows to repeat commands (like the old DOSKEY command). XP also lets you use wildcards for file-name and directory-name completion. Because you can include multiple wildcards in a string, you can even create formulations(is that a word?) such as cd pro*\com*\mic*to get to Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared.
