On my new Windows 98 installation, whenever I attempt to open a Dos prompt window, I get the message "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". Windows works great in all respects. I have 48 MB ram, Pentium 200 CPU, HP Vectra PC. Any ideas? Thanks.
Open windows explorer, find out where he dosprmpt.pif file is , right click it, goto properties, check stuff like memory, screen size, etc, sometimes, it may be trying to use too much memory, or has a bad font size, or something, but if you want you can set all those options to auto.
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML, ASP(somewhat), QBasic(hehe, yea it was 4.5 too, least i didnt start with COBOL)

Can you click on details and get the module where the illegal operation occurred.

Thanks for replying. The error is caused by Symantec LiveUpate. A fatal exception OE has occured at 0028:XXXXXX
VXD SYMEvent(02)+XXXXX.
I removed the offending program and deleted the corresponding registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Vxd\Symevent

If you've already deleted the symevent key, than check you're system.ini, in the [386enh] section for symevnt.386. Add a ; in front of it. I would double the registry to make sure that key is gone and then restart.

Thanks for all your help. Problem resolved.
