We have an emulator running in a .pif program and now we've upgraded to XP it is running very slowly, presumably due to a lack of DOS support in XP, it ran fine in Windows 2000 pro, anyone got any ideas if there is amything that can be done about this?
It ran ok in 2k? That's odd - very little difference between 2k and XP 'dos' environments. Did it always run ok in 2k - or did you have to 'tweak' it to run properly? (like there is an setting 'Compatible timer hardware emulation' you can check - in the properties of the .pif, program tab, advanced button).
Have tried the compatible timer hardware emulation optuion as well but to no avail - i agree it is strange on the win2k / xp thing but the difference is quite noticeable.
Definitely no 2k customised dos settings you haven't carried across? (eg, autoexec.nt & config.nt, or custom versions - you can supply location in .pif properties).
I had exactly your problem and read heaps and tried heaps..
A DOS program was sooooo sllooooooow. Also a WordPerfect as well.
So I got the tip from you guys and typed "compatability" into the help search window... then it found
"Getting older programs to run on Windows XP" which makes your programs compatible etc etc Click that link ...
Start the Program Compatibility Wizard....
It gets a list of programs that are .executable , you choose one and execute the required OS (in my case Win 98) and it worked like a charm on 2 separate computers... hence I believe that this reduces that it is a chance fluke.
Thanks for the tip... albeit somewhat indirect.
So it is not 'Compatible timer hardware emulation' I think it is the Compatability Wizard
