Does the DOS network drivers and client need to be upgraded to the Client32 in order to connect to Netware 5. I can't seem to find any documentation on this. I would assume that Version 5 would be backwards compatible. I'm trying to log a DOS machine onto a Novell 5 server but the DOS driver for the NIC card can't find the server. I can see the server using Client32 but not using Netx. Any ideas
Thanks in advance
Try using the latest version of the VLM's, rather than NETX.exe - that should get you the Red Bar across the top of the screen, and you'll be able to login. Make sure that you specify NDS before Bindery in the configuration file. We're using Altiris Rapideploy here, and it uses a boot diskette with VLM's on it to get to NDS-based servers with no problem. Good luck!
Fred Wanger's advice should do the trick. We are using NetWare Small Business Suite 5. We still have several DOS machines and each of them work OK with VLM's.
I am going to be installing a new NW5 server into a network to replace several 3.X servers. A 4.10 server is the only one with NDS and everything is done through the bindery context. Many machines are using NETX just fine ( we repoint their "public" search library to a "pblic311" with old pgms to keep them happy. Does anyone know if I'll have problems getting this done? I read in November "Inside Netware" that you'll get errors trying to install an NW5 server into a partition whose master replica is on a NW4 server. Anyone have experience with a like situation?

Also, after some screwing around, you can get the DOS 32bit client to run from a floppy....

I started with a single server running NW 4.11 and added NW 5 servers while the [Root] master replica was on the 4.11 server. It can be done. Make sure, though, that you understand migration. You need to set up migration agents, and make sure your 4.10 server is completely up to date on patches. Having said that, I would recommend that you upgrade the 4.10 server to 5 before you add other servers. I wish I had (but Compaq hadn't released the NW 5 compatible drivers in time).

I've got an integrated Intell 8255x 10/100 Nic on three of my PC's. I've got the latest drivers and VLMs. I'm wanting to connect to the network in DOS mode, but the NDS.VLM freezes on me when doing so. I can get to the server with Netx, but since we have Novell 5, I can't get a drive mapping with that. Ideas would be aprreciated!

You really can't use VLMs with the latest Intel 10/100 cards - at least I haven't been able to - so we've switched to the DOS 32bit client when necessary.

Thanks for the reply! Just to let "all y'all" know, I got the v1.21 VLM's and they worked like a charm. Novel guys: either I'm not a good at navigating your site or VLM 1.21 is not here. I had to get it from another source. If anyone needs these VLM's I'll forward the link where I found them. (And it wasn't easy to find them, either!)

When I added the first Netware 5.0 server to our 4.10 tree, I had no problems.
I added a RW replica on the 5.0 server as part of install. I then made the 5.0 server the master before changing any other servers. I would assume it would work the same with 5.1. However, it is important to have the latest version of NDS installed on all the old servers before you start.
