basically what is happening is this:

Save a file (Excel / Word it doesn't matter) and call it for example
"Postcode 12 year study" on a Netware 4.11 server with long files names
loaded. It's DOS name will be postcode.xls.

Create a new document save it in the same folder and call it "postcode", it
takes on the dos name of postcode instead of truncating it and overwrites
the original document.

Vrepair doesn't solve it neither does deleting the volume and recreating
it.

Check if namespace are loaded and added correcly on your server. Sometimes is possible to have a syntax error.

Have you the problem just in Office applications?
I know that some issues related to Office applications:

Check the above link. You can download MIXMODFX.It is a patch that is good to have it.

This should be the procedure torepair such a volume:
1) Dismount the volume
2) Run VREPAIR at the server console
3) Switch back to console screen and load V_LONG
4) Switch back to VREPAIR screen and continue vrepair
5) Remount volume

What service pack are you running? Also what version of LONG.NAM are you on?

What OS are you using on the workstations with what Novell Client?

(Sorry about all of the questions, just helps us to help you!!) ;) -----------------------------------------------------

Recently installed SP9, desktops are running on Win98 using latest client. Have several other netware servers all configured identically and they don't exhibit the same problem.

Have run vrepair which didn't resolve it, deleted and recreated volume, restored data and still have the same problem.

Any other suggestions as I have run out of ideas.

If you type "volumes" at the server console does it show the name space loaded on the volume?

Cheers,

Mark ;-)

If you still have the problem, you have SP9 and MIXMODMX installed, and have run Vrepair, try this:

Example -
directory "K:\ABCDEFGH 123"
shows as "K:\ABCDEFGH" under DOS
create a directory called K:\TEMP
using Windows Explorer(e.g) MOVE (not copy) the directory into K:\TEMP
you now have "K:\TEMP\ABCDEFGH" under DOS
in dos use XCOPY K:\TEMP\*.* K:\ /S
should now give "K:\ABCDEF~1" under DOS
delete the directory K:\TEMP

after doing this you should check that all rights previously assigned for the directory and subdirectories thereof are ok.
