Tried Windows 10 since launch. The only thing I liked was the start menu, but since then, I've grown fond of the tiles and moved everything from my desktop to the tile start.

The reason I'm dumping it is that it's always been buggy.

Windows explorer locking up and crashing (On 850 evo ssd)

Windows explorer loading all the time when browsing folders (again, on ssd)

startup programs not always starting

setttings menu locking up and not allowing me to choose certain menus

updates changing my defaults and reinstalling bloatware MS store apps

The forced updates

The list goes on but I've had it. It's been 2 years and it's still a mess. I'm going back to Windows 8.1. It's faster, more stable, and less intrusive.

I can equally well say that I've personally not experienced any of those things, except for the bloatware as Microsoft don't offer proper tools (yet) to permanently prevent feature updates from reinstalling them (although allegedly such functionality is going to appear in the first 2019 feature update). And you might argue that I'm subject to forced updates, but I'm running W10 Pro, so can defer feature and quality updates for up to a year.

Never seen any consistent problems from one installation of Windows 10 to another across many different brands/models. Seems to be the best Windows yet. Now whether you like the design is something else, but functionally it is very stable. Conclusion: you are an isolated incident. I would try a different computer and/or a clean installation.

Check your memory and hard drive with diagnostic tools before blaming the operating system.

The forced updates

1. I've had a few Explorer lockups, but that is par for the course with Windows, all versions. I see no real difference from when I was running windows 8, or 8.1 Or even XP, 98 etc... Explorer has always had sporadic lockups.

2. That's a glitch, which is documented and reported extensively. It's not really loading. You may get the blue circle mouse pointer, or the stuck green progress bar in the address bar, but again that's a thing that's been happening on most MS operating systems since the loading bar was introduced in Vista. I believe the only time I did not see it, was when running Windows 7, in a virtual machine.

3. Has not happened to me.

4. Also has not happened to me, at least that I can remember.

5. Operating systems include default apps. And will install and reinstall them normally. Not that I have much issue with what Windows 10 installs by default however.

6. Microsoft did in fact advertise this as a feature. Windows s a service now, and updates are required. As mentioned, some versions can delay the updates, but eventually they will be installed.

All in all been running Windows 10 for the last 2 or 3 years on this Dell Laptop, and while I've had some issues, with drivers, and updates breaking compatibility with certain apps, Windows 10 in general has been very stable. I have only seen one blue screen of death in almost 2 years.

So yeah, I agree with the others, in that your particular installation may be mucked up. A format and clean install may be the way to go. There's always the option of dual booting 8.1 and 10 and see which is more stable.

Explorer locking and crashing. Change it from Quick View to This PC under Folder Options.

Forced updates, because people need the updates to keep their PCs secure (so we are told) I have no issue with this.

A lot of IT professionals would argue NOT to go to 8.1. Many of us jumped from 7 to 10 due to how crap 8 and 8.1 are.

TBH, I've had very few problems with windows 10.

The only time explorer crashes at work is when there's a folder with a ridiculously long filename.
I have noticed that if you have a bad file, explorer will crash when trying to display the thumbnail. You may want to turn off thumbnails and see if your issue goes away.

The updating is just a little annoying; at home it's not a big deal, but at work we like to test updates before deploying them. There doesn't seem to be an option to disable the updates and let us push them using our KACE management appliance.

I doubt that W8.1 would be better than W10 in any way... For me it's nearly the same. As a home user I didn't like very much W8, W8.1 and W10, so I left this platform and now I'm a happy Linux user. However, in my work I have to use everything, inclusive W10 too and I have some issues with it too.

You did not mention whether you use it at home or in your job.
But what will you do when W8.1 reaches its end of life? Would it be not a right time for you to give Linux a try?
