Hi - is there any way to tell if a server was set up as a domain in a new forest, child domain in an existing domain tree, or a domain tree in an existing forest?
I'm building a 2003 server (& did 6 last year but have no notes) and want it to be the same as them. Is there any setting or key that would tell me??

Thx

How about looking at AD Users & Computers and seeing what it is set too?

What about right clicking My Computer, choose properties and looking at the Computername Tab?

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark

If the computer name is dunk.local, does that suggest a domain in a new forest, as opposed to the computer name por-lzr.lizard.local which may have been set up as a child domain in an existing domain tree or o domain tree in an existing forest?

How about looking in domains and trusts and seeing if there are any trusts?

Or use the following script:

Set objSysInfo = CreateObject("ADSystemInfo")
Wscript.Echo "Forest DNS Name: " & objSysInfo.ForestDNSName

call it forest.vbs and run "cscript forest.vbs
