We currently have a fractional T-1 line and are fixing to switch to cable or dsl. We have our own domain name XXX@ourdomain.org. Our email, etc uses this domain name. We use a WIN 2k server running DNS, etc. What kind of special issues will I have to overcome to switch to cable or dsl and keep our domain name as it is?

Thanks,

Shannan

Keeping the domain name is not an issue. You will want to purchase a static IP from your cable/DSL provider and make certain that the DNS server managing your domain name knows of the new IP.

Ok, the static I.P. should not be a problem, the new ISP is going to assign us a static one. When you say the DNS server managing our I.P. are you meaning our router? I am new to all of this so please bear with me. Will we not also have to change the static i.p. in the router to the new static i.p.?

Thanks for the help.

Shannan

Most likely the ISP that was providing your connection via T1 was also acting as the DNS server for your domain. There must be a DNS server exposed to the internet that runs the DNS service. This DNS server has an entry like ourdomain.org that points to the IP address of the server acting as ourdomain.org. This DNS server or another one must be setup to point to your new IP address or else everything will be pointing to a non-valid IP address. The provider for your cable/DSL connection should be able to assist.

OK, I will contact them.

Thanks for the help.
