i have a DC which is used as a File server. This week oneof the disk's went in the Array, which i replaced without much fuss.

however, since then, the server reports it can't login because of disk space, there was 9gb free on c when i last looked, and 11gb on the data\share. Users can still access the shares as if nothing was wrong. is this a problem with sysvol?....??

the only way to restart it is by powering it off, which i dont want to do until the replacement hardware arrives next week.

i'm starting to wonder if i'm going to have to remove the DC and clean up AD.
i'm getting replication errors on the working DC.

any help would be greatley appreciated.!

You stated at the top of your message that you replaced the bad disk without much fuss, but then you state later in the post that you don't want to power it down until "replacement hardware arrives". What replacement hardware are you referring to??

What type of array do you have? Is it RAID 5? When you replace the bad drive, did you check to make sure the arrary was rebuilding itself and has that process completed?

Have you checked the event logs on the server to see if it will point you to possible causes of the problem? If you can't log-in to the server to check the logs, you can try to manage a desktop (i.e. right-click on My Computer, then select Manage). Once there, click ACTION - Connecto to another computer and try to connect to your server. If you can then you should be able to see the event logs, etc. from there.

Good luck,

Replacement hardware - I've ordered a new server for it. it was on my list of things to do, but as always never at the top!

it is raid 5, but i'm unable to check the state of the rebuild without powering it off, as i cant attach to it using openmanage.... or login to it. the process started at 8am yesterday, so it's had long enough to rebuild i would have thought.
i can access the log's using the way you've suggested, yet all i'm getting a KDC errors (event id 7) dns error (event id 4015) and event id 4000 and ntds errors 1079.... not a happy bunny!

The rebuild process really depends on many factors. We've seen drive rebuilds take many days. If you have access to the physical server itself, you should be able to tell by looking at the drive lights if it's still rebuilding. My guess is that process is still underway.

During the rebuild, your server, especially on older hardware, is going to be taxed. It's having to function as a file server, but on top of that, it's having to use parity to recreate information that was on the replaced disk, not only to provide it to the controller for rebuilding the new disk, but also to the OS which is having to serve up file data to the users. This creates a very tricky situation for you because the risk of corrupted data has grown for your environment.

ARe there any scheduled daily maint. windows that would allow you to take the server down to do what you need to do?

Good luck,

One more thing I forgot to mention is that you may want to consider your new hardware being just a file server so that your domain controller functions can be seperated from the file server functions your business needs.

Good luck,

Probably all down to the disk space error you mentioned. The KDC event 7 can occur because of lack of disk space as can the 1079 error, particularly if there is no room for the swap file.

Can you map a drive to the admin share C$ on the server and see what is eating up the disk space?

Or it may be a temporary problem whilst the array is still rebuilding....

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?
