Hey All,
Couple questions for you all to ponder over :) I am currently tinkering with Red Hat 8 as an alternative to my Windows 2003 Server. However I was wondering is there anyway to make Linux act as a domain controller, As such authenticate windows logins? Also, I understand linux has built in email server software. Is there any sites around with 'easy to follow'instructions for windows orrientated people around :) ?

Thanks,
Nick Brown

Through the use of a piece of software called Samba, Linux (and other non-Win32 OSes) can participate in Microsoft's networking system. The one thing, so far, it cannot do is act as an Active Directory domain controller. It can, however, act as a domain controller for an NT4-style domain.

Linux supports many mail servers, among them sendmail, postfix and qmail. Which mail server are you using, and what functionality do you require -- webmail, POP3 support, IMAP support, etc?

In the Linux world, various pieces of mail software tend to specialize.

Sendmail, postfix, and qmail are MTAs (Mail Transfer Agents). They listen for incoming SMTP messages and route them where they need to go. But, for example, they do not do POP3 or IMAP. Separate products provide that functionality.

Perhaps this page will help you get a handle on what you want is available.

Generally speaking, the web sites for the MTAs will have additional information on mating their products with POP3, IMAP, and webmail software.

sleipnir214,
On that page it states that development and maintenance of qmail has stopped - is that really the case?
