I already know that I want 512 MB of DDR PC2100 or PC2700 RAM.

I have searched the web for reviews of RAM but I can't find much. No one really says whether it matters what brand of RAM you buy. I figure that "Major Brand" is better than "Generic" but does it really matter?

I'll basically be using my computer for gaming and word processing. I won't be using it for graphic design, digital recording, and the like. Is there anything specific I should look for in RAM like the configuration, speed, etc. or does it really matter?

I appreciate any help! Thanks!

Two things.
Speed
Reliability
Lowest CAS latency = Faster Speed (CL2 best) 2.5 average, 3 slow.
Branded chips are more reliable (samsung, NEC, etc)
As memory is amongst the more unreliable hardware in your system if you go generic at least look for branded chips actually on the memory strips.

Brands really matter in RAM. Not only that, it really makes sense to buy directly from manufacturer to be sure you get the best quality and warranty, even if that means to pay more. RAM is responsible for a large part of computer problems and you really don't want any generic RAM in your system.

Mushkin and Crucial are my favorites, but there are other major brands. There are reviews out there, can't think of a link off the top of my head.

It may also depend on your system. I mean, if you call Compaq tech support, but you don't have Compaq branded memory, they will blame any issue you have on that fact. I don't know how other places are, but if you don't need to be in contact with tech support people often you don't have to worry. Personally, I look for good warranties as RAM will fail, and sometimes it's bad when you get it and you don't want to be hasseled when to try to get a replacement.

My understanding, with the AMD XP chip, name brand top quality memory matters more than it did before. I have Crucial and have no problems. I was told Crucial by some was top quality memory and by some others, it was good but not best. I don't know. I bought it and would buy it again for the price. make sure the memory you have has a lifetime guarantee because it does go bad. Crucial has a terrific return policy/customer service and that's one of the reasons I bought it. I've seen tests of name brand memory and not all 2100 runs at the same speed. Same with 2400 and 2700. Some run faster and some fail when pushed sooner than others.

I have had trouble in the past with "Name Brand" RAM. But, crucial has been great (
Great web site, warranty (which I have never used), FREE FAST shipping, good prices.

If you don't use good quality RAM, you are more likely to experience some or many of the more spurious errors that we regularly see on these forums.

Crucial RAM can be ordered from their website at special "Web Prices", and free delivery. Generally their prices are extremely competive with cheapo brands.

You are so right Citrix but all you need to know is the RAM that you are buying than 4 to 6 lays if so then it is good ram and you will see in the price too.

When you get into the DDR400 speed RAM it is crucial to use only the RAM that motherboard manufacturer recommends. When approaching the speed limit of RAM for a specific type, it gets harder to make RAM that will function properly. I have bought no-name RAM and had compatability problems. Usually outfits like Crucial actually test the RAM before they package it, not just hope for the best.

The PC2100 DDR RAM gives a little bit of flexibility, because you are not pushing the speed envelope of the RAM as much. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Thanks a lot everyone! You all have been a HUGE help!!!
