We have just purchased NB4.5, and it came to use with FP3_GA. I have it installed in a primarily Windows environment with some IRIX and RedHat clients, and it seems to be running fine. I have been doing some research because i have been running into some issues like BackUps on certain machines stopping with a 150 error, that the job was stopped by and Administrator (wich is me). Does it make sence to upgrade to MP6? Is this a cumulative upgrade or do i need to upgrade in steps from FP3-MP6? Can i do an inplace upgrade, or do i have to uninstall NB and reinstall with the latest?

You cannot upgrade from an FP to an MP without uninstalling the FP first. When you uninstall make sure to answer "yes" you are doing this for an upgrade.

I would suggest you upgrade to FP5 or 6 cant remember if 6 is out yet first to see if this works.

Do not go from a "Feature Pack" to a "Maintenance Pack" - There are a lot of benefits in an FP that are not in the MP's. As Comtec17 correctly pointed out - You will have to uninstall the FP from all servers if you are going to a MP level, depending on the master. The master should always be at the highest level of FP or MP in your environment.

Ok... That was my next question. Which is a higher revision, the FP or the MP? Does FP5 have more fixes in it than MP6?

Typically - No. Veritas is keeping the levels consistent. So, MP5 and FP5 will contain the same fixes but FP5 will have the feature upgrades. Typically, MP's are released before FP's.

So the highest revision of FP (5), has more upgrades on it than the MP (6)?

Upgrades - Yes as there are no upgrades in an MP just fixes. A higher MP will contain more fixes than a lower FP.

Hmmmm...OK. So my path should be, Install FP5 on the M\M server. Run the Uninstall for Upgrade on the M\M server. Then install MP6. And then i should do the same for all clients?

No - Once you select to use a FP - Never, never, never install an MP = BAD NEWS if you do.

Thanks...Whew. Glad you said something. I have installed the latest 2 feature packs on my M\M server. Do i need to install it on all the clients as well? Is there a way to push it down to clients(MUST BE)? Can i have an MP on clients and FP on the server?

A general rule - Your master must always be at the highest level of FP etc. Typically if the media servers are at a higher level than the clients being backed up to them, you are okay - It is okay to have clients at a higher level than server but I have seen strange issues so I keep a general rule not to do so.

You should, ASAP, upgrade all clients etc to the latest FP. With Unix you can push the install to clients from the media server aas long as you have the client files on the media server.
