Customer has a VPN set at remote site with JUST a 5610 set and they need a fax but don't want to order a copper line from bell..... any device that would let them fax over internet from a standard fax machine? found something called HANDYTONE - but wasn't able to get the device to work.....

suggestions?

Just use a web based fax to email service, there are plenty on Google and most SIP providers do it too :)

These are construction trailers... they don't have the ability to scan then send to hosted fax service.... not all doc that need to be faxed are electronic...one items is the time sheets - worker signs the time sheet and then faxes to HR - so it needs to be very simple... scanning not an option

you can try and set the fax speed as low as the machine allows it, 9600Bd is already stretching it so try 4800Bd and if need be go down to 2400Bd.
it will most likely work but sometimes have trouble also dependent on the VoIP quality of course.
You need to make sure you use g.711 as anything lower in VoIP quality will for sure not work

Give a tech a solution and he will be back tomorrow to ask you the next question, teach a tech how to read the manual and he will be able to solve the problems for a life time.

Look at the Multitech multivoip stuff :)

Avaya has a device to connect IP world to analog devices. It's said tha faxes and IPtelephony ane not goog fellows, but could work

For inbound I would recommend fax service. Easy to keep track of documents.
For outbound get OBI100 and get account with Callcentric. Get the pay as you go. It's like .0198 per minute. It can receive also. Easy setup.

Have a customer using Faxlogix. They supply a custom ATA device which connects to the fax machine. The way their service works, outbound faxes are sent to Faxlogix server which then sends the fax out. Confirmations are then sent back to the fax machine or available on line. I have seen legal sized loan documents faxed this way without incident.

Not sure of the monthly cost, just know it works.
