Have a bit of a problem. I have a new server and a working domain. How do I setup DNS? DOes the domain controller get setup first? I plan to setup atleast a file server and possibly active directory... if all goes well. Thanks in advance!
If you already have a domain, then you must already have a domain controller. Assuming your currently running NT on your domain then DNS is not a must have as NT uses WINS.
If and when you go for AD then you must have DNS installed and running. However, AD DNS is different to NT DNS (which doesnt support some records required by AD) so i'd suggest upgrading your current DC to 2000/2003 which, during the installation, you will be prompted to provide (or install in your case) DNS. The installation will install and configure DNS for you.
Really! Because, I am in the process of setting up 2003 SBS. The domain is new for example (mydomain.com), if the wizard is going to walk me through it that's even better.
Yep, lots of wizards in 2003 SBS. Only problem is it has to be the primary dc and hold all dc roles on the network. No trusts and no other domains. That's the drawback.
How were you planning on setting up your network?

Set up your dns first, it's a must for AD Don't worry about wins unless you have old machines on the domain. If everything is W2K or later, then wins isn't needed.
