In ERwin, a popular data modeling tool, the three basic modes are Logical, Physical, and Dimensional. In the dimensional mode, there is no logical and physical. The dimensional mode stands by itself. In other words, in a dimensional model, a column can't have both a logical and a physical name -- it can have only one name. Does this comply with dimensional modeling guidelines?

Thanks,
Kim

Dimensional models are actually very simple relational models, falling somewhere between first and second normal form. They are built for the very physical purpose of getting data out of data structures very rapidly. The logical and physical aspects of a dimensional model are almost inseparable.

Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side because there is more manure there - original.

in dimensional model, all the column names must be descriptive coz the column names will be used as a headers/titles in the reports generated by any OLAP tool, so normally it should have only one name either logically or physically.

by the way in 4.1 where did you found the dimensional model, i can see only logical, physical and logical/physical

kishleo,

To find support for dimensional modeling in ERwin 4.1, click on Model | Model Properties | General tab | Dimensional. Then Model | Model Properties | Notation tab | Dimensional Modeling.

Thanks,
Kim
