I have a client who wants to setup a telnet/ssh connection to her home. She uses putty. Is it safe to use putty? Has anyone had any problems with it?

We use the heck out of Putty and love it! I'd highly recommend that you force a SSH2 handshake which you can config. through putty.

There are a few people out there that can hack SSH. I've seen Internet sys-admins discussing this topic in-depth. A strong password helps but putty creates about the same amount of liability as a VPN tunnel.

For the truly paranoid, use Putty with SSH2 in a 168 Bit DES VPN tunnel :) Even the feds would have a hard time cracking that!
