Does anyone konw how to detect the vertical retrace sync under Linux?

I need to make a very smooth crawl on the screen (may show on TV later), the effect of Banner in KDE screensaver is pretty close, but it is not smooth enought. From some material, I know that the way to avoid the tearing is synching with the retrace.

Does anyone know how to dectect the vertical retrace under Linux? I am using RedHat 7.3 right now.

I really need to figure out this as soon as possible, does anybody could help me?
Thanks a lot!

What does this have to do with administering a linux server?
Go to comp.unix.programmers for this.

Look in /etc/X11/XF86Config. This file should have what linux knows about your mouse, keyboard and monitor. Some chipsets don't allow probing so what you find may just be a best guess or what the firmware reports. How to probe the monitor itself is way,WAY beyond anything I could tell you. If you know the model number, you may be able to go to the manufacturers website and get the specs there. Sorry for being so dumb about this.
