Hi,

I have recently created a new user with exactly the same permissions (groups etc) as an existing user.

When I logon as him and try to access his mailbox through Outlook I get the folowing error message;

> "Unable to open your default email folders, you do not have permission to log on."

*If I click cancel then it boots me out of Outlook

or

*If I click OK I get this message;

> "Would you like to open a default file system folder instead?"

My local file system is then openened in the folder list panel.

does anyone have any ideas on what I am doing wrong as I have never seen this one before?

Thanks for looking...

Hi,

Obviously the permissions need to be checked to ensure they are correct check account status, if they ok then give exchange time to apply them. Sometimes it can take a while (<2hrs)

Add someone else into the permissions list and see if they can access the account.

Could also be a profile problem.

Check that the correct username appears in Outlook / MS Exchange properties.

Yes either the profile is pointing to the wrong mailbox or you didn't give the new user account permissions to the mailbox in exchange admin.

If you assign that account as the primary account it works right away but if you are just adding that account as one with permissions it sometimes does not take effect right away.

Sometimes I have to stop and start the exchange services to get the permissions to kick iin.

Exchange 5.5 doesn't distinguish between changes to the primary windows NT account and the other permissions, it simply knows about changes to the permissions of the mailbox. It has a 120 minute timer to synchronise the permissions set on the Directory objects (which is what you're changing when you make permissions changes in Admin) with the Store objects that are associated with the DIR objects.

If you want the timer to run more frequently, has details of a reg setting that will alter this. We set all ours to 5 minutes (not the 1 minute the article suggests) with no obvious penalty. Stopping and restarting the services is an effective - if rather extreme - way of resetting the timer so that the store reads the DIR immediately.

I'm going to assume that you mean you have created a new mailbox with exactly the same settings, so:

In the mailbox properties and under the "General" tab, ensure that the "Primary Windows NT Account" is set to the account of your new user.

Now on the clients computer go into the Control Panel and then into "Mail". Open the "Microsoft Exchange Server" and ensure that it is set to open the correct mailbox.

Last but not least, ensure that you are logged onto the computer as somebody with appropriate permissions (preferably the user of the new mailbox).

Russell.
