I was having a debate with a co-worker about the value of frames in HTML pages. I kind of like them because the make a web site more structured. He seems to think that hardly anyone uses frames, so they must not be worth it.

What do you guys think? Do you all design pages with frames or not?

(Our frame of reference is our company intranet which is IE 5.0 exclusive)

Hi mate,

I see a big problem with that..

If you include the single pages within your robots.txt then engines that do have frames support will not index them..

Also, there are quite a few engines that do not respect the robots.txt protocol, they may be small engines but you don't want to be listed in just the major ones..

I am going to try a few things later with the engine that I have and if I get any useful info I will let you all know..

Hope this helps Wullie

I have to thank you all for this input.

It seems to me that the biggest argument against using frames is that they cause problems with search engines.

So since this project is for a controled intranet enviornment (i.e. no search engines) would anyone change there minds about using frames?

I agree BobbaFet! Frames certainly have their place on the web!

Here's a thought: search engines will get better at indexing frames if people use them more! Since frames have been taboo from the start, only a few brave individuals have faced certain death in using them! As Tracy mentioned earlier, figuring out frames is easy for the search engine, but why waste the time checking if only 1/100 sites use frames? I think I would still check anyways, but is there anyone out there pushing the search engines to work better with frames? Some organization? How about "Frames for a Better World" :: FBW ? The names isn't important i guess. It's the idea that matters! -gerrygerry

That's kind of what I thought too.

We'll probably go without frames. Neither of us are experts and it will give us a good excuse to learn more about CSS and pop-up windows (not that you really need an excuse to learn new stuff...)

(BobbaFet?...you must be really looking forward to the next Star Wars movie huh? Supposed to have alot of Bobba..)

Hi Beren1h,

Actually I am, I do like Star Wars and can't wait to see the
next episode !!!Also I'm very much looking forward to Lord
Of The Rings - The Two Towers, which should be really
awesome because there are a couple of big battles in the
book. But back to the topic, my site is in frames and since
I'm always working on it, I haven't yet submitted it to any
search engines and because it's basically just a bookmark
site of my favorite links, I guess it's not much use either.
Take a look if you like. I'll bet you find it quite nicely
looking.

"you may have problems as you rely so heavily on js" Now there's a whole 'nother issue!

As someone pointed out above (I'm too lazy to reread the thread to figure out who), it only takes a couple of lines of javascript code to force a page to load in a frameset if that's where it belongs. It's one of the first things I learned from my javascript book. That in itself makes the argument against using them because of search engines mess less convincing.

JavaScript doest cause a whole lot of trouble in search
engines. At least I cant see how it could. Almost all of
them use crawlers, and they just check out all the
hyperlinks they find on a page, so it doesn't really matter.

Back to the topic - I never use frames. I can't stand them. Now that I'm working with ASP all the time I don't ever see the point of using them again when I can use Server.Execute in my page, which by the way is sectioned off with a table. Ryan
