Does a dead phone jack means no wiring, or something else?

Hi All, when we installed IPO, the BP did all the wiring. We had a few jacks where credit card machines were, but we went to internet processing for CCs and removed the wall mount machines. Now one of my stores wants to add a phone, and they have the jack that the credit card machine used to use, but if you plug a phone into it, there is nothing. No extension display, no dial tone, but the phone does have power. SO, if I want to make that jack live, do I need to find the pair to which it corresponds and plug it into the DS? I have several sets of pairs that are just floating in free space, not connected to anything...

Thanks, Dawn

Phone does have power? as in dialtone or what? First thing to do would be to figure out where the other end of the wires in the jack are..I would also go ahead and find all the wires floating in free space and figure out where they go to and label them or get rid of them, will save time later/

Infinty306, I think what he meant was that the display came on. I am going to check it myself tomorrow (end of the day for me, YAY!) I calld my BP and he thinks that it was an analog jack, so I'm going to take an analog phone down too. And a toner...

if it was hooked up to a credit card machine previously, most likely it is an analog jack, surprised the digital phone had power to power on the display but then again analog lines do carry quite a bit of power(the tongue test will tell ya that LOL, did that once when I was younger.. think it's 15amps or so), just didn't think the wires would match up...

Hi Dawn
if you plug a digital phone into an analog port (or jack) then it has power and will do something with the light depending on what type of phone you are using, but if it was a POS machine then it is an analog port. Test with a home phone if you have a spare at home bring it in.

Analogue extensions tend to light up the 54xx phones.
A common issue when our customers patch stuff out them selves.

I've always been careful when switching an extension from digital to Analog here or vice-versa afraid I might mess som equipment up. but then I only have to deal with 13 extensions here.

The 54xx phones run off 48V which is line voltage. That is why they light up if plugged into an analog port or just a normal pots line.

I brought an analog phone today, just haven't had a chance to go test it, I'll post the result once I get down there.

Thanks, Dawn

They are right
A digital phone gives a display on analog

I would bet on it big time :)

Ok, took an analog phone down there and I thought the jack was all-mount, but it isn't, so can't connect male to male. Took an old phone from our previous system down, and both wires (we had 2 CC machines down there) give me zip, nada, nothin'. So tomorow I am going to bring in a known good analog phone from home and give it another try.

if you keep doing this then it might be worth investing in some tools, Tone generator and probe is very handy to have and makes it easy to identify if a jack is live and you also find the other end of the cable.

Westi, thanks, in fact I forgot to borrow my hubby's tone generator today, I am going to remember tomorrow! I'd like to tone out all the empty jacks and try to match them with the floating wires...

good stuff, borrowing is much cheaper then buying it and if Hubby won't need it the better.

Westi, ohh he won't let me KEEP it, but I can borrow it for a day or two :)

Dawn: steal one of hubby's in-line connectors while you're at it...(and deny it all later)
