I know this might be an easy question for you but, if I store a 1GB file in sharepoint, does it take up 1GB of disk/db space?

I need to understand more about the storage capacity of sharepoint.

Thanks

Yes it does - sharepoint isn't magic!!

But it may not appear to do it straight away depending on how your database is configured. The database might allocate memory in large blocks, so you might upload a document and see no change in size. Or upload a document and see a much larger change in size.

Hi,

It's possible to store the content outside the SQL database, and keep the DB small. We are using a provider to store the content on a external device and works fine!

look at
Microsoft like's it :)

Cheers both of you.

I like the idea of storing files outside the database if I am limited to db size. I will have a look at the link.

Cheers

Also I work in OpenText Livelink Enterprise Server of their current customers are sharepoint customers who has grown too huge to be manageable.I have done a couple of sharepoint integarations as well.Besides just content storing if you configure records management then you can kill the content as your business rule/file plan dictates. Also OT has another service called archiving which allows you to use very chep medai for not often used content.Much more thought off DMS than SP.The GUI may not look slick to a MS crowd tthough.

Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?
