Do I need a Static Route for InterVlan Routing?

Hey on a Ethernet routing switch 5520 or 5510, do I have to create a static route between 2 vlan interface IP's on the same switch to get intervlan routing running? I'm thinking as long as I have the VLAN interface IP's configured and UP and UP, then the switch should automatically route between those Vlans RIGHT?

I thought I read somewhere that a static route was needed on nortel platforms, but I can't find that material so I'm not sure.

Thanks!

Either you must enable RIP/OSPF on the VLANs or you must set up static routes. If you set up two VLANs without any routing (RIP/OSPF/Manual) then the VLANs will not route between each other.

If you configure two VLANs on the same switch you don't need to configure a static route as the interfaces live on the same device. You do need to globally enable routing/forwarding, but I believe you have to do that anyways to configure IPs on multiple VLANs.

If VLAN 1 is 10.10.9.1/24, and VLAN 2 is 10.10.10.1/24, and you are connected to VLAN 1, you will be able to talk to devices in VLAN 2 provided 10.10.9.1 is configured as your gateway.

Thanks BIV...Those were my thoughts, but I found that DOC I was referring to and I think I got mixed up with normal Static routes and non-local static routes. non-local would be like recursive static routes in cisco where the next hop IP wouldn't be a directly connected network, but would rather require an extra lookup.

I would agree with biv343.

The ERS 5500s can be misleading since they don't show the local routes (for their local interfaces)in their routing table. Almost every other router will show you the local routes for every interface (this includes the ERS 8600).

ERS5510#show ip route
===============================================================================
Ip Route
===============================================================================
DST MASK NEXT COST VLAN PORT PROT TYPE PRF
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total Routes: 0
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TYPE Legend:
I=Indirect Route, D=Direct Route, A=Alternative Route, B=Best Route, E=Ecmp Route, U=Unresolved Route, N=Not in HW

I guess this is to be expected since the ERS 5500 series are really just starting to perform Layer 3 routing.

Cheers!
