Do I Need A New MotherBoard?

Okay i need to know what is going on with my rig.

Heres my setup

-P4 3.6 GHz
-ASUS P5P800
-nVidia 6800GT
-Audigy 2
-Antec 480W TPII-480
-Barracuda 7200.7 200GB HDD

I just got all this together after having to get a new PSU and some fans. Heres what happens: I push the power on button and the fans start running and my heatsink on my processor starts running but the motherboard doesnt boot up. My 4pin and 24 pin are plugged in snugly along with all the other necessary hookups. WTF is going on? I dont care if I need a new mobo or not I just want to know so I can hurry up and get one, I miss running my big rig!

Are you sure the mobo isn't grounding at all on your case?

Might be worth taking everything out and double checking. A bit of a pain but I've had it happen myself.

You need to flat bed this board out of the case and with the absolute minimum connected before writing it off as faulty.

There are just so many other causes that need eliminating before you come to that conclusion.

Motherboard placed on it's box, with CPU/Fan fitted, one stick of ram, graphics card and power supply connected.

Clear the cmos, make sure that this jumper (if it has one) is in it's run position.

Use a small flat blade screwdriver to momentarily touch the pwr (power) pin headers.

You could probably do with having a few spares to hand if possible for the purpose of elimination.

Sounds like it is shorting out. Do you have to have a 4pin power plug also on that thing?

With that video card do you have to have the power adapter plugged into the video card??

Yea it is 4pin and 24pin....i'll try the shorting out thing....also, could I need those little red washers for the screws that mount it to the spacers on the back?

Sounds like a faulty power supply to me, i had a similar issue a while ago.

Do the fans start and then just stop? Or do they run continously until you power the system off?

Well there is a brand new Antec PSU in there, the fans run until i power it off myself....I pulled it out of my case and cleared the CMOS, plugged in the 4pin, 24pin, my video card and then heatsink.....still nothing, personally i think it is my mobo and whenever I get my new one in, it'll fire up just fine, but what do i know

Well, you could take the ram, cpu\hs\fan to a shop where they will likely have a motherboard to test these with. that should cut down your diagnostic time. You could also bring the power supply in as well but i believe what you say is correct since its an Antec and new but you never know.
If you dont know what caused the problem in the first place and you dont have a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) then you could be a victim of a power brown-out or a power surge, the former being worse. The worse part about that is if you dont have a UPS then you will never know if you had a brown-out as they happen in the wink of an eye, but a UPS will know and catch it and save your system.Can i suggest that you buy yourself a UPS when you are all done and up and running again? Usually the lower priced units are good enough for home use so you dont have to spend a lot.
Just going by my experiences with these things. I used to lose a lot of pc parts before i started using UPS's and now i dont. Course i dont know where you live but all of use should be using UPS's anyway as the cost of replacing cpus, hard drives, and vid cards is enormous compared to say, $60 to $100 for a UPS.

Thanks alot for all that info. I dont think that a power surge or anything like that has happened but a UPS does sound like a very smart investment. Where would I be able to find a UPS? Newegg maybe? Thanks again for all the help, my new mobo will be in tomorrow.

newegg is always a great place. But you can call around or visit places like compusa,bestbuy, fry's,circuit city, etc etc in your city if you are in the US, bestbuy, futureshop if in Canada. Someone told me about a sale at circuit city right now, dont know if its still on.
Maybe best to also check at pricewatch.com where they will tell you who has the best prices on the net.
I always say that if i can convince one person to get a UPS its worth any criticism i might get. But i firmly and strongly believe they are that good. I could rattle on in favor and offer proof but i wont.

Using pricewatch i found the cheapest one. In the case of a UPS the biggest item is how long they keep your system going. Having the protection from brown-outs and surges are more important, to me, than how long my system will keep running as either i will be there to turn it off or i wont. I mention this as this is the main reason for paying more for a UPS. There is one other reason and that is you can get protection for your phone line too. But you also have to count up the wattage of the items you will have on the UPS. It gets a bit complicated but getting a middle of the road UPS, pricewise, should do it for just about all of us.

Heres what to do. Go to pricewatch.com, go to peripherals, then click on "backup supplies" then i clicked on the "$12 UPS" listing there. That gets you to another page and they list what it is. Some are replacement batteries, you have to click on "read more at" and it will go to the exact website of the store.
Based on what i have read so far, i see no reason you cant buy the $37 unit with free shipping. There is another that i have listed above, i think its around $40 or so, that looks pretty good too.

One final thing. Some places advertise a low price but then nail you on shipping so be careful on that.
Other places will price match. Other sites will advertise one price on pricewatch and another price on their site for the very same product. You have to call or email them to get the pricewatch price. Sometimes you have to find a little pricewatch button to get the price corrected.

Okay Im starting to get a little mad...I get my new motherboard in(P5P800) and I hook up the video card, cpu, heatsink, and a stick of RAM. I start it up and it works fine, so I turn it off and install it the rest of the way(without grounding it). I have a sound card, video card, 200GB hard drive, 4 fans and 2 CD/DVD rom drives/burners. So I hook up my keyboard, mouse, etc. turn it on and it comes up to the post screen and i can either press tab to go to BIOS setup or DEL to go to setup. My keyboard wasnt working so I turned it off and put it in a different USB port(It was plugged into a USB hub)on the computer. So I turn it on again and I get nothing, no post screen or anything. I opened up my case and I could smell something like melted plastic, but I figured it was just the new thermal paste that I put on my heatsink and CPU. So I gave up for the day and decided to ask you guys what my problem could be. Any suggestions? I got nothing and this really sucks....BAD. Thanks in advance guys!

Also, I took everything back apart, reset the CMOS, put it the Video card, hooked in the PSU, and 1 stick of RAM, but still I got nothing, maybe I fried it when I hooked everything but up??? God this is soo frustrating...

I would take it back to where it was working. In other words, take out the parts that you added. Get it going once again and then add a part at a time until you find a culprit.

Well I pronounced it dead and got an RMA from ASUS which is ironically not far from me ....anyways, Garebo I'll be sticking with your suggestion whenever I get that mobo back. Hopefully I dont run into anymore problems because I need my rig up and running before Christmas, this laptop im on was going to be a present to a friend of mine.
