Do I need a modem?

Can someone tell me if I need a dedicated modem line for my IP Office computer? The system was setup approx. 5 years ago and one of my lines is dedicated to this modem. In all these years, I haven't seen any traffic on that line. Is it needed to talk with the 412 system or the ECAS server (call accounting)? Is it redundant? Any explanation would be most appreciated.

Depends.
They obviously route into the PC via that modem. However I dont do it this way. As long as I have some method of getting into the IP Office its self. I either

A) Set the Default Gateway of the PC to be the IP Office.
B) Set in CMD Route add 192.168.99.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.42.1 /p (where 192.168.42.1 is ip of IP Office)

Using RDP/Net Support/VNC I then get into the pc this way.

I think the system may be setup via the second option, but I'm unclear what CMD Route refers to. Sorry for the neophite questions. Thanks for your help.

CMD means Command and it opens the commandline (dosbox)

Of course; I thought it refered to something in the Manager software. Is there an simple test to see if the IP412 is talking with the computer once I remove the modem cable?

When that route is in then dial in in to the ipoffice and ping the pc
If that works and use remote desktop to take over that pc

But i don't understand why you need that iproute in the pc
If the pc has an ipadres in the same subnet you do not need to set an iproute

I really confused now. I don't want to setup anything different then I have now. The system is working well.

I just need to know why there was a dedicated phone line set to the computer modem. The company that installed it has gone out of business so there's no one to ask why they set it up that way.

Are any of you using a modem to talk with your controll unit? Does the Manager or System Status software need a modem? I'd love to take that dedicated phone line and add a line to the system.

The only thing i can think of is for someone to dial into the PC and manage it. unplug it for a while and see if anyone complains. it should not be used for any components to work together.

Thank you kwing. I've unplugged the modem and will wait a week to see if anything happens. Yippee! Another outgoing line!!

The only reason this could have been used, is perhaps system failure. IE all trunks down going into the IPO. Then the maintainer could get to the PC by a standalone method and offer you better service. They would just be able to check the fault truely lie with your CO provider and is not a system issue.

Well, it will be easy enough to plug the line back into the modem if I experience a system failure. But in the meantime, I'd much rather have that line be of some regular use.
