Do ethernet ports need any special config when used for WAN

Hi

I'm looking to configure 2x 2811 Cisco routers, connected by a BT 10mb national ethernet. As the 2811's have two ethernet ports, the plan was to connect one port to the internal network and one to the BT demarc at each site. My question is, does the ethernet ports I'm using for the WAN connection need any special config?

Thanks in advance

Rob

Does the ethernet going to the WAN have a public or private IP address?

Hi Burt

It's an internal link and BT haven't provided any IP info, so I was going to use a private class C with 30 bit mask.

Thanks

Rob

Well, aside from NAT if it were a public IP address, no---there is no special config. Just treat it as if you are on their LAN...

As this is will probably be a heavily used link, I would enable some type of queueing on the interface. This will help users receive a better experience overall.

To be simple, just go to the interface and enable fair-queue.

If you wanted to get more extravagant, especially if you have voice or other latency sensitive applications use modular QoS..

Many thanks for your advice, I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Thanks

I would actually recommend against queueing on a high speed link like that unless you really need to. For example, if you've got a lot of real-time traffic (voice or video) that is regularly intermixed with non-real-time traffic, then perhaps you might want some. Otherwise, queueing isn't really necessary on links this fast. Cisco recommends not using fair queueing on Ethernet links.
