Is there something with DNS and Windows 2000 Professional. It appears that if you list more than one DNS server for the local machine, than there is no guarantee that it will look at them in any order. Since the information in the two listed is not necessarily the same it causes problems. Any clues?

DNS does have a search order in W2K. Under TCP/IP properties click on the ADVANCED button and then DNS tab and the first field is labeled "DNS server address, in order of use" Same with the DNS suffix.
The DNS server listed on top is what is searched first. We haven't noticed any problems with the search order in our network.

The order is set correctly, however, once in a while it will grab an address out of the second listing, and only use that server. It will not use the first again until a reboot occurs. I guess the quick fix would be to have the DNS servers give out the identical information.
How are you obtaining this information? Is it with a login script that maps to other servernames sporadically, or is it something different?
Are you in a WAN environment using Active Directory, or an NT4 domain (PDC, BDC running DNS/WINS)?
Sounds like your leases are expiring on the primary domain controller due to lack of syncronization, and therefore grabbing the BDC's copy (outdated perhaps) to authenticate the user. Check the eventlogs on the DC and BDC to confirm this...check WINS (if applicable) for tombstoned computer accounts, and DHCP for lease durations.
