Is there any advantage to use DNS vs. Workgroup?

I think you mean a Domain vs a Workgroup. There are many advantages to using a Domain over a workgroup. Centralized management being the biggest. You only have to set up users on the server, instead of each local machine. You can push software out to them via policies. You can enforce restrictions on their machines. The list goes on and on...
DNS is how hostnames resolve into IP addresses.
