Just a general question: How would a person setup the DNS domains in a test lab?

Example: I want to build the root "." DNS server, a .com .org DNS server, and then a client DNS server.

This is strictly for learning and "fun".

Thanks for your time.

Strictly speaking zone files are what matters here. The root zone is the only one that differ because it must not resolve recursively. (recursive must be set to "no").

The other DNS serevrs should be authorative for their own zone. A DNS zone never points upwards, only down. You need an NS statement in each zonefile (incl. root) for the sub zones and their authorative DNS server for.

Each non-root server need a hints zonefile with the root server in it.

Does that make sense??
