I have recently upgraded NT4 PDC server to Win2k adv server this is also the DNS server. I am experincing problems with the XP client pc slow browsing on netowork and also on a win2k server try to promote it to a DC comes back with the errror 'can find active directory to connect to'.

I have check DNS server settings and can see nothing wrong. there are the two entries for start of authority which points to itself (dns name) and the Name server which also points to itsself, we also have two external dns servers that we use to access to the internet do I need to add these details to the DNS server?

Am I missing something ?

Is the server you are trying to promote pointing to the current DC for its DNS?
You can put the external DNS settings in as forwarders for your local DNS, but they don't have to be there for your internal DNS to work. They will just help when you want to browse outside your local domain.

Yes the server I am trying to promote does have the DNS server as its first entry.

when I try nslookup function is comes up with the error cannot find server name for address non-existant domain.

I am now getting the following error for the DNS server when trying nslookup

DSn request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds

Another thing is that I cannot ping the FQDN from any machine yet when setting up DNS server it automatically creates these entries ?

Set up the dns server to point to itself in tcp/ip properties as the primary dns server.

I had alrady done that when setting up the DNS server

Verify that your domain suffix's match. There is a known issue when upgrading from NT 4.0 to 2003 where the domain suffix name is mismatched with the rest of the domain. An article at MS KB discusses a resolution to this problem.

Hope that helps.
