Hi,

I am a newbie to networks and have been lurking on a number of tech forums for pointers, and now have a situation which I can get an answer to on the web.

First here is some history - The family and I are living in a rural part of Ireland with dial-up internet access only, both my wife and myself own Toshiba laptops with wireless LAN adpaters and I have built a Intel P4 2.66g desktop as well.

In order for us to share the internet access, we decided to create a home network with the Linksys DSL router with wireless access point (BEFW11SR4) and use the desktop as a primary server with ICS.

The setup is the desktop has a dial-up modem connecting to the internet and connecting to the Linksys router via the WAN port (modem port if I've got it right), with ip address 198.168.0.1 using Windows 2000 pro sp3 ICS. The two laptops are as follows Toshiba Satelite 1800 with Linksys Wirless adapter running Windows 2000 pro sp3 (connecting fine to the network with ip address 192.168.1.100) and my wife has a Toshiba Portege 4010 with built in wireless adapter running Windows 2000 pro sp4 with ip192.168.1.101. The Linksys router has an ip address for the second LAN of 192.168.1.1 and ip address for the ICS connection automatically assigned.

The Satelite laptop can see all the other ip addresses (ICS desktop, Linksys router and Portege), while the Portege can ping all the ip addresses but is unable to map a drive to the ICS desktop and the Satelite can. I have tried using static ip addressing on the Portege as well as using 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.0 as the default Gateway to no avail.

I have two problems now.

1) How do I get the Portege to file share with the desktop ICS server? (yes there is a folders shared and we all have administration rights when logged on)

2) A bigger problem for my wife is that she cannot get shared Internet access with the ICS server and now her dial up access is messed up (not sure if messing about with the TCP/IP caused it). The Portege can dial up the ISP and get connected but is not able to browse the internet, nor email, nor instant message. The Portege can ping ip addresses but unable to ping domain names, this points me to awith DNS problem. I have attempted to use the ISP DNS servers in the properties of the modem but still no luck. Downloaded Bcastner's winsockfix.zip utility still no browsing. Trying to avoid a full reinstall of Windows if possible anyone have any suggestions?

Hope this wasn't too long winded I've noticed some people needed as much info as possible to help

Cheers,

I think the problem is that your network is on a different subnet then the ICS HOST computer.

I would disable DHCP on the router, and connect the router to the ICS Host computer using the Uplink LAN port and not the WAN port.

The workstations should then pull IPs from the ICS Host and not the router.

You would set the clients to 'obtain an IP address automaticly'

Thanks Bcastner,
I got my wife to uninstall TCP/IP and reinstalled it. She got a blue screen error after trying to dial up, after the reboot she was able to access the wireless network and browse the internet. I thought it was weird that I could do everthing on my laptop with wireless adapter and she wasn't. It turned out to be a corrupt TCP/IP after all.

BTW I left the desktop server connected to the WAN port and the network works a charm everyone can see each other and File sharing access isn't a problem either between the 2 laptops an d the desktop server both directions.

Cheers,
Carl
